We deserve better than senseless vandalism

Hate-fueled violence has no place in our community and a recent senseless act of vandalism on LINE Wangaratta’s Pride Hub shows why we must continue to stand with our local LGBTQIA+ community.

The Pride Hub moved from the Wangaratta Woollen Mills site on Textile Avenue to the West End earlier this year and it has been serving as a vital, safe space for community in its three years of operation.

LINE Wangaratta’s efforts in operating the hub foster the inclusive community spirit that makes our region stronger, ensuring that every person feels valued and belongs.

LGBTQIA+ people, families and communities continue to face discriminatory behaviour of this nature and it’s something that is far too common.

Our community is no stranger to this and its actions of these select few that show why the work of Line Wangaratta and the Pride Hub is so important.

Supporting the LGBTQIA+ group is about supporting a future where tolerance is the default, and vandalism is met not with silence, but with unity and stronger commitment to inclusion.

In a close-knit regional community like ours, such attacks strike at the very heart of inclusion and it undermines the values we should cherish.

Unlike a big city where the act may be masked in anonymity, it’s impact here is magnified.

We cannot afford to have any segment of our population, especially those working to promote acceptance, fear being targeted.

True community strength comes from lifting everyone up, not tearing down those who are different.
