High winds, but Wangaratta mostly unscathed from Wednesday storms

As Victoria was met with devastating winds statewide on Wednesday, Wangaratta went through relatively unscathed despite experiencing high winds for most of the afternoon.

Gusts of up to 81km/h hit Wangaratta’s Bureau of Meteorology recording station as high wind swept through from around 4pm until around 1am overnight.

Just the 3mm of rain fell between 11am and 1:30pm.

Wangaratta VICSES Unit controller Jess Zuber said crews were called to five requests for assistance for fallen trees and were not as busy as many other areas in the state.

“It appears the community took warnings seriously which helped provide the positive outcome,” she said.

Conditions are expected to be steady until Saturday with a high of 23 degrees, but 7-25mm of rain and a likely thunderstorm was forecast for Sunday.

Ms Zuber urged the community to stay alert and safe as the bad weather came and to be wary of fallen trees on the road over the next few days.
