Euroa breaks through with five-goal victory at Mooroopna

SENIOR XVIII

COACH Dave Gleeson was a very happy man following the final siren on Saturday, as his team secured their first win of the season against Mooroopna at Mooroopna Recreation Reserve.

The inclusion of Nate Trotter for his first senior match of the year provided a significant boost to the playing group, coaching staff, and supporters.

His contribution as a strong presence up-forward was a key factor in Euroa’s win.

Playing their first senior matches for the club were young Callan Howell (promoted from the under-18 team) and returning Euroa local Zac Clarke, who has been impressive in the Reserves team in 2025.

James Henry made his return but was unfortunately sidelined during the match with a lower leg injury.

Nicholas McCabe came up from the Reserves and revelled in the win.

Nicholas Asquith was rock-solid down back, continually repelling Mooroopna’s forward entries and denying easy shots at goal.

Cohen Paul continued his strong early-season form, dominating aerial contests and providing vital drive into the forward line.

The move of Jack McKernan into the ruck due to James Henry’s injury proved decisive, with Jack’s competitiveness, fitness, and skill giving midfielders Lachy Hill, Max Gleeson, and Jacob Gleeson the advantage at stoppages.

Captain Jett Trotter and forward Declan Redfern capitalised on their opportunities up-forward.

The five-goal margin at full-time was a rewarding outcome and sets the team up well for Saturday’s clash against Shepparton Swans at Memorial Oval (2pm start).

With key players set to return this weekend and next, the team is hungry for more success.

AS the teams entered the ground, there was a sense that the match would be closely contested — and it proved to be just that.

Both sides fought hard to gain control of the ball and move it into their forward lines, with neither team able to break away for most of the game.

Spectators were treated to a committed display, with players from both sides giving their all.

Once again, Euroa was required to call upon players from other clubs and the thirds side — their contributions were greatly appreciated.

Captain Mitch Penman led the team well from defence, while Isaiah Trotter was a strong contributor both up-forward and in the ruck.

Jye Bjorksten battled hard in the ruck, staying committed to his task.

Nicholas Hill made a timely impact, kicking three goals when needed.

Nathan Woods again played his part, contributing two crucial goals.

New recruit Henry Thomas showed promising signs in his first outing for the club, while Nick Thomson continued his hard-running form.

It was pleasing to see the players smiling post-match — a win always lifts team morale.

SCOREBOARD: Euroa 5.9.39 defeated Mooroopna 4.8.32.

BEST PLAYERS: Isaiah Trotter, Nathan Woods, Nicholas Hill, Henry Thomas, Brodie Asquith.

GOAL KICKERS: Nicholas Hill (three), Nathan Woods (two).

Mooroopna started strongly, but Euroa’s backline worked tirelessly to limit their opportunities.

Mooroopna’s persistence was rewarded with the first goal of the game, and Euroa matched their intensity to create several chances but could not convert.

Mooroopna led 16–2 at quarter-time.

In the second quarter, Euroa’s midfield found plenty of the ball and constructed some impressive passages of play, but the elusive first goal remained out of reach. Mooroopna added the only goal of the term, extending their lead to 22–6.

The Cats’ strong leading patterns, clean marking, and accuracy in front of goal saw them take control, finishing the third quarter with a 49–7 lead.

Euroa was finally rewarded on the scoreboard in the fourth quarter, with Drew Coller kicking the team’s only goal.

However, inaccuracy in front of goal proved costly.

Despite matching Mooroopna in forward entries, Euroa was unable to make the most of their opportunities.

SCOREBOARD: Euroa 1.10.16 defeated by Mooroopna 9.8.62.

BEST PLAYERS: Casey Collett, Max Miller, Jack Walters, Drew Coller, Harrison Mills.

GOAL KICKER: Drew Coller (one).
