Celebrating 50 years at Glenellerslie

NEW South Wales Hereford stud, Glenellerslie have an outstanding line up for their 31st Sale at their property, 908 - 1064 Yaven Creek Road, Adelong on February 13.

Celebrating 50 years, Gordon Smith originally purchased cows from South Bukalong Hereford Stud at Bombala with the stud going from strength to strength over the decades, on the back of Gordon talking the Garnocks into selling him Ardno Dynamic son South Bukalong Guardsman.

They had intended to use him themselves.

Guardsman was still siring calves at 15 years of age.

"It didn’t matter who you joined him to, you got a good calf," said stud principal, Ross Smith.

"You could pick out which ones were his in the neighbour’s cattle.

"He wasn’t a rogue but it was hard to keep the creek baulks up in the days of no electric fences."

Glenellerslie made their first foray in 1979 to the Wodonga Show and Sale taking Eagle and Elton, and walking away with third and fourth ribbons and $1750 and $1250 respectively.

"Both creditable results for first timers," said Ross with a smile.

"Those two bulls were taught to lead the Saturday before the sale.

"We started teaching them earlier after that."

Success at Wodonga culminated in Glenellerslie Richie AI by Widgiewa Britisher BE7 gaining a first ribbon and selling to South Boorook for $21,000 in 1993.

"It was even more fantastic when you consider that we had joined him to quite a few cows as a yearling, which would have held him back," said Ross.

“Glenellerslie” was part of Ellerslie Estate, taken up as a soldier settler block by Gordon and June in 1948.

The neighbouring property, “Spyglass” was purchased in 1977 and part of “Back Lester” was purchased in 1993 to bring the total to 793 hectares.

Besides these purchases, Gordon also had purchased 1500 acres of “Billapalap” in 1965 with brother Stewart, who went out on his own in 1977.

You might say that Gordon was a doer, not afraid to have a go at anything whereas June was more of a pessimist, telling us before every Wodonga Sale, “I don’t know why you are going, you won’t do any good.”

Gordon cheerfully proved her wrong.

Twenty-five Hereford and 21 Poll Hereford bulls will be offered on Tuesday February 13 from 1pm by Helmsman Auction.

Once again, the sale will be interfaced with AuctionsPlus so the bulls can be inspected on day five of the Stock and Land Beef Week Field Days on Wednesday January 31.
