Purple bin roll-out on the table

KERBSIDE glass container collection will start across 12,000 households in the rural city from September and food organics and garden organics (FOGO) pick-up will also begin in smaller towns in August.

This is the recommended option that Rural City of Wangaratta councillors will be presented with at the May council meeting on Tuesday afternoon.

Under the recommendation, all households ‘where practicable’ will be supplied with a purple lidded bin for glass, and rural properties which do not currently have a FOGO (green lidded) bin, will join the kerbside service.

Based on a kerbside recycling audit, council predicts the city will generate 1642kg of glass each week [25 per cent container deposit scheme eligible], or 1025 tonnes of glass per year.

The rollout of the FOGO bins would include North Wangaratta, Waldara, Killawarra/Kensington Drive, Wangaratta South, Glenrowan, Tarrawingee, Eldorado, Whorouly, Everton, Peechelba, Springhurst, Moyhu, Whitfield and Cheshunt ‘township’ and ‘low density residential’ zones.

A standard 240-litre FOGO bin would be provided, with an annual charge of $208.

These households would also have their general waste bin (red-lidded) downsized to a 140-litre bin (from 240-litre), which reduces the general waste charge by $174.

This would result in a net increase of $34 per year to the residents’ existing waste charge.

The delivery of the kerbside glass collection to towns currently participating in the FOGO service area including Wangaratta, Glenrowan, Oxley and Milawa, is as second option for councillors to consider.

Other options were glass to Wangaratta urban only; pause roll-out; or do not expand services.

Victorian councils have a statutory duty to provide a standardised four-stream household waste and recycling service by July 2027.

Both glass and FOGO kerbside collection will be serviced by council collection vehicles.

The May council meeting will be held at the Wangaratta council chambers at 62-68 Ovens Street at 3pm Tuesday.
