Heavyweights of the WDCA A grade competition for the past decade are set to clash once again in a mouthwatering early season barometer test.

Rovers United Bruck and Yarrawonga Mulwala look set to be entrenched at the top of the standings once again this season after cruising to wins in their opening encounters this year.

The two teams have crossed paths in many cutthroat late season battles throughout the years, as recently as the semi-final to end last season and the grand final the season prior.

While coming together early in the season may whimper in comparison, RUB captain Jeremy Wilson said the fire in the belly still flares up that little bit more when the blue and yellow come into town.

“There’s a general mutual respect among the players and their want to win,” he said.

“They were pretty impressive last week so we’ll need to stick to the things we’ve been doing well the past couple of weeks to give ourselves a chance.”

RUB have chased down a pair of meager totals with ease to start the season with a pair of home wins over Benalla and Beechworth.

Traditionally they would have had the chance to push for extra runs, change up the batting order or attempt to score bonus points on the standings, but new rules implemented this season has meant the game goes to a stop at the end of the overs.

As someone self-admittedly closer to veteran status than their younger days, Wilson said the early finishes were a refreshing change, but the shortened games seemed to be adding more intensity to the play on the field.

“The focus has certainly changed and the interest in it feels better which is what it’s all about,” he said.

“But at the end of the day it all comes down to scoring more runs than the other team”

For RUB, Matt Whitten will come back into the starting 11 after missing last week.

After a bye in round one, Yarrawonga Mulwala were made to field out all but two balls of their overs in a 75-run win over City Colts.

All-rounder Devlin Webb had a dream debut with the team, scoring 64 runs and finishing with 5/29.

Webb is a former Australian junior who had four years of Victorian Premier cricket experience before joining the Lakers this season.

Wilson said Webb will be one to watch for his team, but their focus would remain on what they can control.

For RUB Charith Perera will look to continue his hot start to the season with two 50s at more than run a ball and Will Graham has slipped into the bowling lineup seamlessly taking six wickets over two matches.

First ball will be bowled at Wj Findlay Oval at 12:30pm.
