Ovens Valley United’s A grade side won’t be taking a City Colts team hungry for their first win on the new WDCA season lightly when they face off in Wangaratta this Saturday.

The Tigers impressed in their 53-run opening round win over Beechworth with the ball and the bat and had themselves the bye last week.

A grade captain Seamus Phillips, Dylan Bursill and English import Joel Jordan filled in for the shorthanded A reserve team.

While the A reserve Tigers fell short to Delatite at Lords, Phillips said it was good to have some continuation in their game as he looked to build on momentum established in their season opener.

“We had a good win [in round one] so we just wanted to try and keep that momentum up,” he said.

“Against Beechworth, the top of the order got starts; we have a bit to work on the middle of the order but that will come with time in the middle, I’ve got faith in everyone who bats in that top eight or nine to make runs this year.

“We were good with the ball for the whole 40 overs, we hit our lines and lengths perfect and we just want to take that into this week.”

City Colts will be looking for their first win of the season at Bill O’Callaghan Oval after falling in their opening two games to Wangaratta and Yarrawonga Mulwala.

City Colts boast a new look lineup this season following the departures of Nanson brothers Josh and Tyler and have turned to promising youth to fill the holes including the likes of Alasdair Brett, Jed Marek and Connor Ormond.

“Both games they’ve put good scores on the board so we’re not underestimating them at all,” Phillips said.

“We’ve got to put a good score on the board if we bat first and then hopefully get the job done with the ball.”

Phillips said the starting 11 would most likely remain unchanged from their round one victory.

Elsewhere Ovens Valley B grade started their season on a positive note with a 15-run win over Beechworth at RC McNamara Reserve.

Geoffrey Zach led the runs with 32 as the Tigers posted 7/145 while Louis Sanderson, Oscar Lewis and Josh Harris took three wickets each with the ball, bowling out the Wanderers for 130.

B grade will take on Milawa at Milawa this weekend while A reserve face Wangaratta at Norm Minns Oval.
