Rainfall welcomed, but more needed

No doubt many of us were letting out a sigh of relief as the heavens finally opened up yesterday afternoon and our city and surrounding areas were soaked with our best rainfall this month, if not all spring.

The past two months had delivered less than 28mm of rain up until yesterday, in what has so far been a below average year for rainfall in our region.

While our water storage levels remain healthy, local gardens and the landscape have been showing telling signs of dry sub-soils.

Demands on our domestic water supply are rising, and will continue to do so as we seek to keep gardens alive as the warmer weather sets in.

While we hope for more rainfall in the weeks ahead, it’s important to continue to use water wisely, particularly outdoors.

Taskforce to continue search for fugitive

Victoria Police’s transition from a command centre operation to a taskforce phase was to be expected in the ongoing hunt for fugitive Desmond Freeman.

The substantial resources Victoria Police and others have committed for more than two months has so far failed to locate the man alleged to have killed two police officers and injured a third at his Porepunkah property on 26 August.

While resources have changed, the resolve of Victoria Police has not, and we in the wider community need to continue to support the force’s efforts.

The $1 million reward for information leading to the arrest of the fugitive remains in place and anyone who can assist should contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
