AVENEL GOLF
Saturday’s golf was a Stableford round with a difference, that difference being that players could only use 3 clubs of their choice plus their putter.
It was cold and a bit windy but 13 players, including Jim Ewert from Murchison, accepted the challenge and by the end of the day, most were wondering why they carry a full set of clubs when just a few will do the job.
This was reflected in Lyn Carracher’s round as she scored 39 points (79 off the stick), to claim the winner’s voucher.
Runner-up was a countback between Tim Batten and Lance Carracher with both players on 35 points.
Tim was the lucky one and no doubt his ten putts on the back nine helped secure the win.
Line balls went to Lance and Jim Ewert who both scored 33 points.
Tim, Lance, and Jim each collected another ball for nearest-the-pin on the 18th, 14th, and 8th respectively while drive and pitch balls went to Dale Smith on the 7th and Ollie Aitken on the 17th.
Dale also won this week’s Imperial Hotel voucher.
This Saturday is Stableford off the back tees.
Members will have noted that there’s a fair bit of leafy debris and smallish branches laying around the course so if anyone has a bit of time to spare, please call out to the course and do a bit of picking up, it will be much appreciated.
A few reminders – firstly, the club championships kick off on Saturday 2 August with the first qualifying round, and the 2nd qualifying round on Saturday 9 August.
Secondly, the Victorian Sandgreen Championships are at Charlton Golf Club on the weekend of the 23-24 August, and those intending to play need to enter with Golf Australia by Thursday 14 August.
Good golfing!!

Doug Neville dug deep to win Sunday's stroke event with the course playing long.
In a cold start to the day, Neville was fired up from the beginning, accustomed to leaking shots during a round, Neville was watertight, piping drives, and draining putts to post 95-23-72 and win by one.
Runner up went to Michael Sloan, submitting a solid round and declaring that he is in good form coming into the championship in two weeks-time.
The result of his good work was 75-2-73.
Rounding out the top three was Wayne Le Cerf, playing partner of the winner and who pushed everyone in the group for the entire day, carding himself a very respectable 97-23-74.
The nearest-the-pin prizes were difficult to reach on the longer front nine holes with no one claiming them.
Jim Doyle played a nicely timed approach to the 13th and Michael Sloan fired a ripper onto the 16th.
The Nagambie pennant team were away at the Mooroopna golf club taking on Tatura Hilltop and were needing to win 4&1 or better to advance to the final the following week.
Unfortunately, the team won 3&2 so missed out on a finals berth by the smallest of margins.
Next week's golf is the CFA fundraising event and Stableford will be played.
Lunch will be provided by the local CFA brigade with all funds raised to help the local crew.
Hit off is 9am, and everyone is welcome.

The Euroa Men’s Saturday competition was played as a Stableford event where the players were set a different challenge of competing from the red tee markers which sees the course slope rating come in from 121 down to 111.
The enthusiasm of the playing group for the shorter course was short-lived when the players checked their daily handicaps.
Low markers Ed Carracher and Paul Robinson were set the task of playing from a plus-6 handicap.
Richard Eddy had to play from scratch, and Lucas Paul and Paddy McCarthy were given handicaps of just one.
21 players took on the challenge and in Division 1, Neil Healey handled the course the best with 36 points from his handicap of 11 which is 5 shots fewer than his regular handicap.
In Division 2, Dan Murphy had six shots shaved from his regular handicap but still had an amazing 40 points playing from a handicap of 12.
John Gilbert had 37 points, and Lucas Paul won the putting with just 22 putts.
Paul Robinson collected two nearest-the-pins.
Trotters Mitre 10 were the weekly sponsors.
On Wednesday only 10 players competed in the Stableford event which was won by Paddy McCarthy with 36 points, which also saw him pocket the swindle prize pool.
Walter and Ash Pedder each collected a ball down the line.
