As the 2025–26 season approaches, the Senior CFA Runners are preparing for another exciting year of competition.
Coach Billy Williams prepares the team for the upcoming season.
“Our goals are simple,” says Williams.
“We had a great year last season, and this year we aim to improve.
"While winning the state championships is the ultimate goal for any team, I will call the season a success if I see improvement across the squad.”
Pre-season officially kicked off in September.
Williams emphasises the importance of preparation: “Getting the team ready physically and mentally early in the season sets the foundation for success later on.”
“The team is shaping up quite well.
“We have a strong group of returning runners, alongside a few talented juniors stepping up to the senior ranks.
"As a coach, I’m spoilt for choice when assembling the best team for each event.”
Most of last season’s runners are returning, providing continuity and experience.
“We’ve also recruited a couple of promising juniors, and my hope is that by joining the senior team, they can continue building on the skills learned from the junior coaches while picking up new techniques along the way."
Williams notes that the team, like all competitors, will face new challenges this season.
“A couple of new events have been introduced this year, so learning these alongside my runners will be a challenge.
"But knowing my team, I’m confident we can rise to the occasion.”
For anyone interested in joining the sport, Williams offers simple but encouraging advice:
“Come down and give it a crack, everyone is welcome from ages 11 up.
"You won’t regret it.”
Training also goes beyond just physical fitness.
“We focus on training, yes, but we also make sure to enjoy it.
"Mistakes happen, and it’s all part of learning.
"Veterans often share tips with newer runners, and the team works closely together, supporting each other across all events.”
With a mix of experience and emerging talent, 2025–26 promises to be a year to watch, and Williams is optimistic about the team’s trajectory.
“With the current juniors coming through and our returning seniors, I think the team could be unstoppable in a few years.
"I’m excited to see how it develops.”
