Finals hopes are slipping away for Avenel whilst a resurgent Longwood stormed home to a 66 point win in Round 16 of the Kyabram District Football League.

Longwood’s Shane Harvey had a day out up forward, finishing with six goals and causing constant headaches for the Avenel's defence.

The win moves Longwood into fifth place, equal on wins with fourth placed Nagambie, keeping their finals hopes very much alive.

Avenel coach JD Delaney spoke candidly after the loss.

“We were looking forward to redeeming ourselves after last week’s result,” he said.

“The boys came in with confidence against a much improved Longwood team, which we knew we had to be at our best to beat.”

But Longwood burst out of the gates and dominated early.

“They jumped us really early and we just couldn’t slow their momentum.

"We got caught playing catch-up all game.”

Avenel responded with aggression after the break.

“I challenged the boys to take the game on in the second half.

"We did that and it showed on the scoreboard.

"But to Longwood’s credit, they weathered the storm and outclassed us all day.

“Hard loss to take, but we’ll keep chugging along into our last home game next week.”

Violet Town now sit in ninth but showed promising signs.

Avenel A Grade Netball bounce back with a strong victory over Longwood

It was a more positive result for Avenel on the netball court, where they overcame Longwood with a convincing 47 to 33 win in A Grade.

Coach Georgia Velt praised her team’s lift in the final term.

“We really capitalised on things more, we had put ourselves under a lot of pressure, but we fought to get the goals happening in that final quarter.”

She applauded individual adjustments and a strong finish.

“Ash came from behind a lot and did such a good job after we had to find a different move for her.

"The second quarter wasn’t quite clicking and we started pushing some long balls, but the last quarter was absolutely excellent.”
