The off season alternatives are now mainly done and dusted as we prepare for summer sports to commence, with bowls being the number one choice for members and supporters of the Euroa Bowls Club.
There is something special about the countdown to the new season.
On Saturday we had a social gathering with a bowling version of footy followed by some food and socialising with friends while we watched the big clash.
Thanks are extended to those who arranged the day, supplied and prepared the food, and cleaned up afterwards.
It is worth noting that while the AFL had Snoop Dogg here in Euroa, we had Lotti Dog and there is no question as to who provides the best entertainment and value for money.
On Friday the Benalla Bowls Club held a Five-a-Side tournament, and we had four teams among the strong field of 24.
Two of our teams won four games and lost two, with the combination of Ken Sutcliffe, Andy Houston, Shane Holmes, Tony Thomson and Brian Bamford finishing third on ends won, an excellent performance.
The other two sides both won three games, and it was an enjoyable but tiring day that was followed by an extensive debrief back at the club.
A special mention to Bill Jennings, who bowled brilliantly throughout the day.
Last Wednesday we had 26 participate in social bowls, with JB and BB (Jeremy Boruch and Brian Bamford) collecting the cash as the only three game winners.
Names on the board if you wish to play social bowls this week.
On Saturday we have our first Pennant practice match against Benalla (at Benalla) and entries also close this week for our men’s and women’s singles and pairs club championship games.
Members are reminded that you need to be financial to participate in both Pennant matches and club championship events.
We are looking forward to the 25/26 competition, and the club is proud of the fact that we have sides in divisions one and three of both weekend and midweek Pennant along with division four midweek and division five weekend.
In many ways we are punching above our weight against the bigger Shepparton and surrounds-based clubs, and it is a challenge that we relish.
Division five in weekend Pennant has an extra challenge this year, being one of eight sides commencing the season 16 points behind three others.
They talk about the luck of the draw, but this seems a bit unfair.
We have a number of new members this year, including a couple of promising juniors, which is especially pleasing.
Bowls is a game for all ages, so if you are interested in learning about the game come on down for a roll.
There are members bowling most evenings and the green is set up for training on a Thursday.
Coach Bill Taylor will be on deck to provide advice for new or intending bowlers as well as current members wishing to hone their skills.
There is only one Nifty Fifty number left, which means the winning will commence soon.
All clubs rely on the support of sponsors and this week we extend our thanks to MJ Floyd Funeral Services, located at 107-109 Binney Street, Euroa. It is comforting to know that there is someone who can provide professional support, advice and assistance during the difficult grieving process.
Jeffrey More and the team can be contacted on 03 5795 1086 or via their website: floydfunerals.com.au
All the best and bowl well.
