NAGAMBIE GOLF CLUB
By DAVID LOVE
The Nagambie Golf Club’s longest-running and most prestigious four ball event, the Goulburn Cup, proudly sponsored by the Nagambie Rowing Club, was as popular as ever with 76 players teeing off under perfect spring skies.
After years of near misses, the pairing of Gary Bow and Shane McCormick finally broke through for a well deserved victory.
Known for their consistent performances in major four ball events, their names now join the honour board.
With only plus one on the card at the turn, they might have doubted their chances, but a blistering back nine featuring six pluses secured the win in a dramatic three-way countback, all finishing on plus seven.
Runners up were the in-form duo Michael Nolan and Glen Evans, unlucky to lose on countback despite a strong plus five on the back nine.
Third place went to the late forming team of Jim Doyle and Shayne Kimball, who gelled perfectly to grind out a hard fought plus seven.
The women were also in action on the day, with Annette Mills and Jane Bow winning the day's Stableford event with an impressive 44-point total.
Great shot making and teamwork secured the win for the well deserved winners.
Runners up one point behind on 43 were Carol Wallis and Helen Claverton-Jones, sharing the load for a great result.
The nearest the pin prizes for the women’s division went to Tina Gribbin, with a stunner at the third, and Irene Keogh, who smashed her shot onto the 16th.
For the men, Lindsay Hall gave it his all at the third, Ryan Ezard produced a well timed long iron onto the eighth, Hugh Lawrence finessed an accurate strike to the 13th, and Michael Sloan hammered home a beauty at the 16th.
The Nagambie Golf Club would like to thank its sponsors, the Nagambie Rowing Club, as well as all the club volunteers who made the day such a great success.
Next week’s golf at Nagambie will be a Stableford event, with the fourth round of the social club trophy.
Office duty will be M. Sloan, with D. Neville in the bar.
