The euroa gazette
Trotter boots seven as Euroa ends home season in style

SENIORS XVIII

In a dominant display for the final home game of 2025, the senior Euroa Magpies delivered a complete performance that ticked every box for coaching staff Dave Gleeson, Neale Poole, and Chris Burke.

Returning to the line up were Declan Redfern and brothers Max and Zac Gleeson, replacing Cohen Paul (season ending back injury), Jack Walters (returned to under 18s), and Jack Frewen (unavailable due to work commitments).

Euroa booted five first quarter goals to Mooroopna’s solitary major, as captain Jett Trotter led from the front with an outstanding seven-goal haul.

From the opening bounce, the Magpies imposed themselves on the contest.

The second quarter followed a similar script, with Euroa adding four goals to Mooroopna’s one.

Ruckman Jack McKernan dominated in the air and around the ground in a best-on-ground display.

Max Gleeson made an immediate impact on return, while Zac Gleeson’s strong hands and fearless leads were a standout, described by some as almost ‘badger like’ in their ferocity.

The second half mirrored the first, as the Magpies added another six goals while restricting Mooroopna to just one.

Jayden Gleeson found form, while the ever reliable Lachlan Hill continued to attack each contest with determination.

Dublin Anderson showcased the form seen in preseason, with a composed game on the wing.

Euroa now heads into a split round bye.

The next match is on Saturday, 16 August at Princess Park, Shepparton, against the Shepparton Swans.

Co-coaches James Henry and Declan Redfern were unsure whether a match would go ahead, as Mooroopna struggled to field a reserves side.

After consultation between both coaching groups, it was agreed the match would proceed as a 16-a-side contest, with several Euroa players assisting Mooroopna.

Mooroopna got off to a fast start, kicking four first quarter goals.

However, Euroa regrouped and tightened their defence, managing to lead by half time.

The Magpies continued to gain confidence as the match progressed, moving the ball effectively and converting opportunities into goals.

A good spread of contributors shared the ball, with the experienced players stepping up to guide the group.

A big thanks to Mooroopna for ensuring a match could be played.

It has been a challenging season for both clubs, but their resilience and sportsmanship are commendable.

Mooroopna came out firing, kicking two quick goals in the opening five minutes despite solid defensive efforts from Euroa.

The Magpies managed a few behinds but were unable to match Mooroopna’s scoreboard pressure in the first half.

Baxter Fraser opened Euroa’s account with a goal in the second term, but Mooroopna responded promptly and maintained its advantage.

Euroa played their best football in the third quarter, lifting their work rate and dominating the contest, with the Magpies kicking five straight behinds before Drew Coller, Noah Campbell, and Campbell Baker converted goals.

Improved accountability and physical contests gave Euroa momentum.

Goals to Ollie Wilson, Jack Walters and Sam Mills brought Euroa within six points.

However, Mooroopna responded with the final five scoring shots to secure the win.
