Porepunkah to get support

The Allan Labor Government is standing with the people of Porepunkah and providing support following the shocking and heartbreaking events at the end of last month.

Two Victoria Police officers were shot and killed while a third one was severely injured on Tuesday 26 August while issuing an arrest warrant at a Porepunkah property.

In what is now described as the largest police operation in Australia's policing history, a large contingent of officers, including members of interstate police forces, is searching Mt Buffalo National Park and surrounds for the alleged gunman.

Since 26 August, tourists and residents have had restricted access to the area, including the next town of Bright and Mt Buffalo, which is a favourite snow destination for families.

Treasurer Jaclyn Symes announced on Monday 15 September that help would be delivered to local businesses and the community, with up to $2.5 million provided to support the visitor economy in Porepunkah, Bright, and the surrounding region.

“What occurred was shocking and utterly heartbreaking and we’ll continue to stand with the Porepunkah community and provide them every support they need,” Ms Symes said.

“While our brave emergency services are still responding to this unthinkable crime, we know that businesses need support.

"This package will help the local community right now and into the future.”

The support will include:

*$5,000 grants for eligible businesses that have experienced significant disruptions and revenue losses following the incident
