Police investigating suspicious Platypus Beach tree fire

Police are investigating a suspicious tree fire lit in the Northern Beaches on Wednesday morning.

A Fire Rescue Victoria (FRV) spokesperson said firefighters from FRV and CFA responded to the incident along the Ovens River at 7:15am after a Triple Zero caller taking a morning walk reported a tree fire.

Firefighters arrived on scene to find a large red gum tree near Platypus Beach on fire with flames spreading to nearby grass and scrub.

The tree was around 30m high and 1.5m wide, located off the trail and near the entrance of the Northern Beaches from College Street.

“Crews worked quickly to make the scene safe, bringing the incident under control at 8:47am,” the FRV spokesperson said.

“The fire has been deemed suspicious.”

Police were called to the scene and are investigating the circumstances of the incident.

Forest Fire Management Victoria firefighters also assisted on scene.

A VicEmergency community information alert was issued, notifying nearby walkers to avoid the Platypus Beach area and to be mindful of smoke.

The Bullawah Cultural Trail walking path remained open throughout the duration of the incident.

The tree fire was the second of its kind this year at the Northern Beaches.

In the early hours of 6 April, emergency services contained a large, hollowed gum tree, approximately 100 feet high, well alight, near the entrance to Northern Beaches.
