More than 200 guests came together on Friday, 24 October at the Wangaratta Turf Club to celebrate Merriwa Industries’ 50-year milestone and recognise outstanding achievements at the annual Merriwa Awards Ceremony.
Hosted by long-time friend and MC Steve Bowen, the evening combined reflection, recognition, and celebration - honouring Merriwa’s proud history, inclusive culture, and the people who have shaped the organisation since its beginnings as the North Eastern Sheltered Workshop Association in 1975.
Special guests included Merriwa board chair Dr Christine Cunningham, interim CEO Sasha Oliver, board members past and present, and long-serving community supporters.
A warm message was shared from Indi Independent federal MP Helen Haines, acknowledging Merriwa’s contribution to a “more inclusive, productive and compassionate community".
Guests enjoyed welcome drinks, dinner, live entertainment, and a premiere screening of Merriwa’s new 50-Year Celebration Footage, highlighting the organisation’s remarkable journey and its people.
Dr Cunningham congratulated all recipients and nominees for the evening's award, saying they reflect the heart of Merriwa - teamwork, inclusion, and integrity.
"Every nominee should be proud of their contribution to making Merriwa a place where people of all abilities can reach their potential,” she said.
Interim CEO Sasha Oliver told those present that celebrating 50 years is not just about looking back.
"It’s about honouring everyone who continues to build a strong, inclusive future,” she said.
The evening concluded with a ceremonial cake-cutting led by Hugh Elford, Danny O’Donoghue, and Wendy Reed, before the dance floor came alive.
