Wangaratta's Lara Pearson performed extremely well at this month's Virtus World Athletics Championships in Brisbane, finishing as female youth gold medallist for the event.
The 15-year-old Wangaratta District Specialist School student represented Australia at the 11-14 October championships, finishing first in the 100m and 200m (setting a new Virtus youth world record with 27.18).
Her other results were fourth in the 400m, second in the 800m and second in long jump.
Lara's gold medal was earned through a points system similar to a heptathlon event, which is employed as the youth athletes are still in a growth phase at international competition level.
WDSS physical education teacher Rowan Barrow, who was Australian team manager for the championships, said Lara built great friendships with her fellow 46 teammates in the village environment.
She even shared a room with her Paralympic idol, Telaya Blacksmith.
"I am so incredibly proud of how Lara accepted this new challenge in the spotlight, and we will both walk away changed people from this Virtus experience," Rowan said.
"Just to give some context of her times, in comparison with the adult category, her times against the Womens ii1 category could have placed her fourth in 100m with 13.03 secs, and her 200m time could have placed her sixth - 27.18.
"This is a remarkable achievement in her first year of athletics and on a world stage, as the majority of the women's category had just returned from the World Para Athletics Champs in India and are Paralympians.
"We would like to extend our gratitude to all Lara's sponsors and supporters for financial assistance to make her dream come true, and her coach Jason Anderson from Albury Athletics who made the trip to Brisbane to ensure she was ready for peak performance at the competition."
More than 300 participants from at least 30 countries took part in the track and field event, which showcases the sporting excellence of elite athletes with an intellectual impairment.
