Greenham Beef Sustainability Standard launched in Wangaratta

AN enthusiastic crowd gathered at the Wangaratta Turf Club last Monday for the official launch of the Greenham Beef Sustainability Standard (GBSS).

The voluntary on-farm standard was developed in partnership with industry experts, customers, and producers in response to growing market demand for beef with robust and transparent sustainability credentials.

The practical program is aligned with the themes identified by industry in the Australian Beef Sustainability Framework (ABSF): animal welfare, environmental stewardship, people and the community, and economic resilience.

Those in attendance heard for several guest speakers at the launch.

MLA beef sustainability manager Jacob Betros spoke about industry progress and new sustainability goals.

Greenham managing director, Peter Greenham; Mick Taylor from Fulton Market Group (McDonald's beef buyer); and NAB’s James Bentley discussed who is asking about our sustainability credentials and what they’re seeking.

GBSS pilot producers, Gavin Furness (Bena), Gary and Linda Nankervis (Towong), and Tom Whinney (Chatsworth) explained how the standard was applied on-farm: the challenges, benefits, and future opportunities.

Experienced agro-ecologist and sustainability consultant, Leanne Sheriff, walked attendees through the simple tools and explainers developed to support producers.

And Greenham livestock supply chain manager, Jess Loughland, talked about the next steps for the standard and how people can get involved.
