A grade fall short against Seymour

A GRADE

Second placed Euroa faced third-placed Seymour on Saturday in a showdown that promised intensity and delivered weather the players would rather forget.

In winter conditions not yet seen this season, it rained steadily from the first whistle to the last.

Sideline meteorologist Sophie confirmed, “It’s coming in on an angle”, and she was right.

Despite the sideways rain, the match was hotly contested.

Seymour held a five goal lead at halftime, and coach Ellie shifted into full chess mode, rotating combinations in search of a comeback.

In a surprise move, Olivia Morris shifted to goal attack, making way for Sarah Ternes, who entered the game at goal shooter with intensity showing in every movement.

The change sparked energy in the attacking end, but the relentless weather and Seymour’s disciplined play kept the Magpies from closing the gap.

Defensively, Hollie Reid was everywhere until a minor ankle scare caused a moment of concern.

Fortunately, she returned to play.

Eliza Hoare was tenacious as ever, chasing every loose ball with her trademark never say die attitude.

Despite the tough 51 to 35 result, the effort, adaptability and soaked spirits of the Magpies could not be faulted.

Bring on next week with hopefully less sideways rain and one week closer to Mia Sudo’s return to the team.

BEST PLAYERS: Hollie Reid, Eliza Hoare, Sarah Ternes.

B GRADE

In a positive display of determination and discipline, Euroa’s B grade team overcame both the weather and top of the table Seymour to record a victory on a rain soaked court.

From the opening whistle, it was clear the conditions would play a major role.

Persistent rain made footing treacherous and ball handling unpredictable, but the Magpies adapted quickly, focusing on short sharp passes and smart movement off the ball.

The first quarter was evenly contested, with both sides adjusting to the slick surface.

Defensively, Euroa stood tall and goal keeper Katy Frewen and goal defence Kelly Hill forming a resolute wall in the circle.

Their efforts restricted the usually free scoring opposition, frustrating the Seymour goalers at every turn.

In the second quarter, Euroa found their rhythm.

Wing attack Bree Poole and centre Bree Sudomirski began to dominate the midcourt, threading accurate feeds into shooters Molly Redfern and Sarah Ternes, who remained composed under pressure and converted with remarkable accuracy despite the wet conditions.

The third quarter saw the top side mount a comeback, closing the gap to just one goal at one point.

But the Magpies responded with calm heads and clever play.

The rain kept falling, the wind kept howling, the supporters kept shivering and the Magpies just kept plugging away.

In the final quarter, Euroa turned up the intensity.

Wing defence Millie Watson disrupted the opposition’s attacking rhythm, picking up key intercepts that sparked fast counterattacks.

After four tightly contested quarters, Euroa gradually pulled away, outscoring the opposition to seal the win and claim an impressive scalp in the process.

Supporters are encouraged to head to Memorial Oval on Saturday to cheer on the players in their last home game before finals commence.

SCOREBOARD: Euroa 42 defeated Seymour 36.

BEST PLAYERS: Bree Sudomirski, Bree Poole, Kelly Hill

B RESERVE

The B reserve Magpies took on ladder leaders Seymour in classic winter netball conditions.

From the outset, it was a tightly contested game.

Despite the miserable weather, the Euroa players gave it everything in the annual TAC Round.

Many reported they could no longer feel their fingers, which may explain the goaler copping a mid-match falcon.

A direct hit to the face courtesy of a slippery pass (don’t worry, she is fine).

Defensive pressure was intense, particularly from Tejuan Sutherland, who was relentless in goal defence.

Her efforts earned her a black eye before she had to be subbed off in injury time, a badge of honour for her commitment.

Megan O’Bree returned to the court after a tough bout of pneumonia and did not miss a beat.

She worked tirelessly in the midcourt, providing drive and calm in chaotic conditions.

Sienna Trotter also stepped up, growing more confident in the wing defence bib each week and offering strong defensive coverage.

Despite Euroa being in the match for all four quarters, Seymour’s steadiness in the slippery conditions gave them the edge needed to claim the win.

Bring on next week, hopefully with dry hands and no new bruises.

SCOREBOARD: Seymour 37 defeated Euroa 30.

BEST PLAYERS: Megan O’Bree, Tejuan Sutherland, Sienna Trotter.

17 AND UNDER

In wet conditions at Seymour, the 17 and under team battled out a close game against the more highly ranked Seymour side.

After a slow start that saw the score quickly run away, the Euroa girls settled in late in the first quarter to bring the margin back to just four goals.

Steady shooting by Ella Hill, along with strong feeds from Alice Ludlow and Marnie Salter, helped close the gap.

Young gun Avie Hill came into defence and brought calm to both ends, combining well with Macey Watson’s strong defensive work.

The team maintained steady play each quarter, with some valuable intercepts in the midcourt from Ruby Fowler, and careful handling of a heavy wet ball by Marnie Salter and Jade Raleigh.

The final two quarters, played in pouring rain, saw some changes in on court positions.

Alice Ludlow had a stint in defence, stepping up in the absence of injured goal keeper Charli Pittock. Bethan Burton injected pace and accuracy in attack, while Ella Hill continued her strong shooting, helping Euroa stay within reach of Seymour.

Going into the last quarter, great teamwork from Macey Watson and Avie Hill in the last line of defence stood out, dominating rebounds.

Intercepts and steady hands from Evie O’Dwyer at wing defence also helped keep the momentum.

The girls got within three goals, but time ran out.

It was a very competitive match from Euroa’s 17 and under team, making Seymour earn their win.

SCOREBOARD: Seymour 36 defeated Euroa 33.

BEST PLAYERS: Ella Hill, Macey Watson, Avie Hill.

15 AND UNDER

Euroa’s Magpies girls travelled on Saturday to face Seymour on a wet and cold day.

Euroa started strongly, with all seven girls on court performing well.

The defensive end was solid, the attackers were sharp, and the midcourt worked hard.

Plenty of encouragement came from the Magpies’ bench.

Euroa led 19 to two at quarter time.

In the second quarter, Euroa maintained momentum.

Fresh legs rotated onto the court, the defenders continued applying pressure, the midcourt combined well, and the shooters remained accurate.

The third quarter saw a few changes, but Euroa continued to dominate.

Strong play came from all areas of the court.

Seymour managed to score a few goals, but Euroa maintained a commanding lead.

In the final quarter, the Magpies powered home with confidence.

All nine girls contributed and had a positive impact.

The win provides a solid confidence boost leading into next week’s match against Mooroopna, who currently sit at the top of the ladder.

Congratulations to the Magpies girls on a strong win, and to Bethan Burton for receiving the game ball for Indigenous Round.

SCOREBOARD: Euroa 60 defeated Seymour 19.
