From strength to strength at Alpine Angus

THE past 18 months have been an incredible time for cattle producers throughout much of Australia, with favourable seasons, massive demand and mind–blowing prices.

Alpine Angus have felt lucky that they are a participant in the beef industry, with the strong demand for Alpine–bred weaners over this period.

"We are fortunate that many quality commercial herds source bulls from Alpine, producing calves that regularly receive increased repeat buyer demand for backgrounding, fattening and breeding," said Alpine Principal, Jim Delany.

"Our goal is to produce sound, functional, true–to–type Angus with added performance and an emphasis on moderate birth weight and high growth.

"We aim to breed cattle that go the distance, with strong conformation and the ability to contribute to profitable farming operations."

Alpine Angus's 2021 and 2022 bull sales saw some amazing results, which was highlighted by four bulls sold becoming AI sires.

As well, Alpine has sold multiple stud sires and commercial bulls to all states of Australia bar the Northern Territory.

"However our core business and primary focus is producing bulls for producers in the high country, its valleys and the surrounding slopes and plains of Victoria and Southern NSW," said Alpine manager, Chris Oswin.

"We are thankful for the amazing support we receive from cattle breeders in these local areas."

From the stud's 2021 sales, two Karoo Main Event sons featured in the Genetics Australia semen catalogue with Alpine Main Event Q192 becoming one of the leading volume semen sellers and Alpine Rip Wheeler R144 meeting strong demand for his combination of outstanding phenotype and big birth to growth spread.

The 2022 Autumn sale saw two quality Rennylea N542 sons enter AI catalogues, with the sale topper, Alpine Real Deal R163 being purchased by a Western Australia and New Zealand syndicate and semen marketed by ABS Australia.

Real Deal semen has seen considerable use thanks to his combination of structure, body depth, performance and high IMF.

Alpine Ronaldo R232 was purchased by Hardhat Angus and semen marketed by ST Genetics Australia.

Two full brothers to Ronaldo also ended up as herd sires with one purchased by JB Angus in South Australia and the other going to a partnership of Dulverton Angus and Five Star Cattle company.

Finally Alpine's 2022 Spring top seller and highest–priced Alpine bull sold to date, Alpine 38 Special S021, purchased by Arkle Angus in Western Australia for $120,000, is currently in quarantine preparing for the collection of EU qualified semen.

"At Alpine we have been fortunate to be expanding our operations during a time of such buoyancy and are looking to consolidate on the strong foundations we have built," said Oswin.

"Joining close to 1000 females in 2022, we are focused on maintaining the quality and trueness of type in our herd, while increasing performance.

"We target sound, high performance sires produced from strong maternal lines that will have a positive influence on the physical strengths of our herd, while continually improving our EBVs and the overall performance potential of our cattle.

"We are particularly excited by the genetics coming through our embryo transfer program.

"Dams of the above mentioned AI sires are currently producing embryos."

The 2023 Alpine Angus Autumn Bull Sale offering 115 bulls will be held on Wednesday March 15 at their Rosewhite on–farm sales complex.

A preview for prospective buyers will be held on Sunday March 5 from 11am to 3pm, with the stud also offering private inspections by appointment.
