Hikers found dead at Mount Bogong identified as Melbourne women

Police have formally identified two hikers who were found dead at an isolated hiking area at Mount Bogong earlier in the month as Melbourne-based women.

A Victoria Police spokesperson said a report would be prepared for the coroner after the two women from Clayton aged 24 and 30 were found deceased at Lendednfeld Point, Nelse on Friday, 3 October.

The women were in an open area, fully exposed to the elements on the snow scoured ridge line located between Summit Hut and Cleve Cole Hut.

Emergency services were first called by passerby hikers who came across the bodies about 12:50pm that day.

The spokesperson said the deaths were not being treated as suspicious.

Police believed the two women had likely succumbed to the weather conditions, suffering severe hypothermia.

Temperatures dropped to minus 2.8 degrees, winds up to 83km/h and some snowfall was recorded in the days prior to and following the incident according to police.

Police were uncertain how long the women had been deceased.
