Cattle yarding well up but prices down on last month

A yarding almost double the previous month’s store sale saw 2332 cattle sold at Wangaratta Livestock Exchange last Thursday.

A total of 1174 steers, 1034 heifers, 73 cows and calves, and 39 bulls changed hands for $3,168,575 at Wangaratta’s well attended October Store Sale.

Corcoran Parker selling agent Reiley Murtagh said the larger than average October numbers probably reflected the enticing pricing as well as prevailing conditions.

“While the market trend has seen prices drop between 40 to 50 cents a kilo from last month’s store sale, prices are still very good,” he said.

“At Thursday’s market we had strong bidding from northern buyers seeking stock for feedlotting and restocking, and local feedlots were also very active.”

Mr Murtagh said while dry conditions prevailed locally in October, there was still alot of grass growth and feed for stock and it wqas “still very positive”.
